How to Save an Instagram Video on iPhone, Step by Step
October 13, 2026 · 5 min read

To save an Instagram video on iPhone, copy the post's link, paste it into VideoDropper in Safari, and tap download. The MP4 usually lands in your Files app, and you can move it to your camera roll from there. This only works if the post is public.
What you need before you start
- An iPhone with Safari. The steps below are written for Safari, and other browsers can handle downloads differently.
- The link to a public Instagram video or reel. Private accounts won't work.
- Permission to save the video. See the note on copyright further down.
Step-by-step: save an Instagram video on iPhone
- Open Instagram and find the video or reel you want. Tap the Share arrow (the paper plane icon), then tap Copy link. Nothing visible happens, but the link is now on your clipboard.
- Open Safari and go to the VideoDropper reels page. Using Safari matters here. Browsers built into other apps, including Instagram's own, can block or hide downloads.
- Tap the link field, tap it again to bring up the Paste option, and paste the link. Then tap the download button.
- Wait for the preview to load. If the post is public, you'll see the video with a download option.
- Tap Download. Safari will usually ask you to confirm. Tap Download again.
- Look for the small download icon near the address bar. Tap it to see your recent downloads and open the video.
Move the video to your camera roll
Safari saves downloads to the Files app, not straight to Photos. If you want the video in your camera roll, you need one extra step.
- Open the Files app and go to the Downloads folder. Depending on your settings, it may sit under iCloud Drive or On My iPhone.
- Tap the video to preview it and check that it plays with sound.
- Tap the Share icon, then choose Save Video.
- Open the Photos app. The video should appear in Recents at the top of your library.
Once it's in Photos, it behaves like any video you recorded yourself. You can trim it, share it or back it up.
Why you might not be able to save an Instagram video on iPhone
The link shows an error
The most common cause is a private account. VideoDropper only works with public posts, and there's no way around that. A deleted post or a link that was only partly copied will also fail. Go back to Instagram, copy the link again and retry.
The download starts but you can't find the file
Check Files, then Downloads. If it isn't there, open Settings, then Apps, then Safari, and look at the Downloads setting to see where Safari saves files. You can change the location there.
The video plays with no sound
Some Instagram videos have no audio track at all, so there's nothing to save. If the original is silent in Instagram, the saved copy will be silent too. Also check that your iPhone isn't muted and the volume is up.
The quality looks soft
You get the best quality available from the original post. The file won't be sharper than what the creator uploaded, and nothing is upscaled. Instagram also compresses videos when they're posted, which affects every copy.
You're trying to save a story or highlight
Stories and highlights are less reliable than regular posts. They may not load even when the account is public. You can try the stories page, but it isn't guaranteed to work.
Downloading vs. screen recording
Screen recording is built into iPhone, so some people use it instead. It works, but it records everything on screen, including buttons, captions and notifications, and the video quality depends on your display. A download gives you the video file itself, without the interface around it. Screen recording is still a fair fallback when a link won't load, though it doesn't change what you're allowed to do with the video.
A note on copyright
Save videos you made yourself, videos you have permission to use, or videos you're otherwise legally allowed to keep. Instagram videos belong to their creators. If you plan to repost or reuse one, ask the creator first and give credit. For more detail, read the Terms and the Disclaimer.
Frequently asked questions
Can I save an Instagram video on iPhone without an app?
Yes. You can do it in Safari with no app install. Copy the link in Instagram, paste it into the downloader, and save the file from the browser.
Where do Instagram videos go after I download them in Safari?
They usually go to the Downloads folder in the Files app. From there you can tap Share and choose Save Video to add them to your camera roll.
Can I save a video from a private account?
No. The tool only works with public posts. If a video is private, you can't save it this way.
Can I save just the audio from an Instagram video?
Yes. The audio page saves the sound as an MP3 at 320 kbps. The quality is limited by the compressed audio in the original post.
Why does my downloaded video look different from the one on Instagram?
Instagram compresses videos on upload, and the downloaded file reflects that. You get the best quality available from the post, not a higher-resolution version.
